Packaging Design

L/Os To understand the requirements for the Packaging Design section of this unit

Starter - 15 minutes

Ensure that you have completed the packaging design on paper and in 2D Design and added it to your design log

Take a look at allfreedownloads.com for images

Main Task - 40 minutes

You are going to start to create the artwork DESIGN for your packaging this lesson...

The packaging design must relate to the style of the shop and include:
  • a photomontage to cover the outside of the packaging
  • the logo
  • the shop name

Create the surface design for your packaging. Remember you must comply with copyright.
Definition: Photo Montage - Photo Montage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining two or more photographs into an illusion of an unreal subject.

Instructions on how to get your 2D Design into Photoshop:

1) In 2D design, delete all measurements, select all and then increase the thickness of the line you have used - up to about 3mm should be fine.

2) Once this is done, select all again and copy and paste your net into a new Photoshop file. Set the canvas size as below, essentially A4 landscape.

Your net should paste into a new layer that is separate to the background layer. Lock the layer your net pasted to so that you do not edit it by accident.

3) Begin to fill your net with your packaging designs - see example below

Packaging - Part 2

LO: To understand the coursework requirements and outline your initial ideas.

Starter - 10 minutes

NET:

As explained last lesson, you must design flat-pack cardboard packaging for a takeaway meal. The packaging must close securely without using glue or other fixings. It must be possible to make it from one net.

The net must:

  • be drawn accurately using vector tools
  • show cut lines and folds
  • fold to make the complete packaging

Use this link for inspiration: http://www.mr-d-n-t.co.uk/nets.htm

Here is one that Emily found!

You may need to do several drafts to check scale before you are happy

This photo shows several attempts on getting the scale correct, 1:4 then 1:2.5 were used, eventually 1:2.5 with a landscape setting was selected

Main - 45 minutes

Create your net in 2D Design...

You may need to go into File > Print Setup to change to Landscape before you print

It is recommend you set the following before you begin:
From the Setup > Drawing > Layout menu, select ISO A4 as your paper type, click OK.

From the Setup > Drawing > Scale menu, select a suitable Scale for your Drawing, anything from 1:2 to 1:4 should work depending on your real life size, click OK.

Double click on the 'Dim Lines' icon on the left hand side

From this menu change the Units to 'Manual' and then click on 'Units'.

Double check that the Length Units is set to Millimetres and then tick 'Display Units', click OK.

Lastly, select 'Grid Lock' from the menu on the right hand side.

Double check that you have set this up correctly, if you have, you are ready to begin designing!

What makes effective packaging?

LO: To understand the coursework requirements and outline your initial ideas.

Starter - 10 min

What makes effective packaging?

Look at the Dominos Pizza box as an example...

What makes this packaging effective?
Does it hold the food well? Why?
What are your thoughts about ...
The shape of it?
The materials used to make it?
The folds and tabs?

Main Task - 50 min

Your next task is the following:

You must design flat-pack cardboard packaging for a takeaway meal. The packaging must close securely without using glue or other fixings. It must be possible to make it from one net.

See here for the SPB

Use this link for inspiration: http://www.mr-d-n-t.co.uk/nets.htm

Draw your initial ideas in your Take It Away Booklet. You may use scrap paper too.
