Web Design - Learning a bit of CSS!

Today you are going to experiment with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), before designing your very own website. CSS determine the look and layout of your website.

Here are your tasks - good luck!!


Starter Task - 10 minutes

  1. You'll need a choice of colours for this task. For a list of Hex Triplet colours (ie #ffffff which is white) go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors
  2. You'll practise using CSS tutorials on w3schools.com. Start with this one: http://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss_background-color_body
  3. Try editing the background colour like so (I am simply changing the # number to #E52B50):
  4. Keep practising!
  5. Next, change the text like so:

Main Task - 45 minutes 

  1. Excellent progress! Now click on http://www.w3schools.com/css/tryit.asp?filename=trycss_background-image_position and try some advance editing .......
  2. Replace 'img_tree.png' (highlighted above) with 'paper.gif' and make it repeat like so:
  3. Head to http://www.w3schools.com/css/ and have some more fun editing :-)

Plenary - 5 minutes


  1. Share your CSS experiences via your blog and with the rest of the class. 
  2. Discuss the elements/aspect of CSS you may use on your own website for this unit. You could set it out like this:
