Unit 2: Memory

L/O 1 - To develop your knowledge of Cache, RAM, Registers and Hard Drives

OUTCOMES:

Red - You will have completed a worksheet for Cache, RAM, Registers and Hard Drives
Amber - You will have learnt the main differences between 
RAM and ROM
Green - You will have started answering the exam questions

RED Task


Fill in the worksheet to help you to understand what Cache, RAM, Registers and Hard Drive are

  • Using the Computer Performance worksheet label the three types of memory 
  • Using the Computer Performance worksheet cut and stick the correct memory type to the correct description
  • Stick the worksheet into your books and find out the answers 

AMBER Task


In your books create a table like the one below and give me at least FOUR differences between RAM and ROM



GREEN Task


Use the website/presentation/YouTube to help you to complete these three exam questions:



  1. What is held in RAM when a computer is running? 3 marks
  2. Tom's computer is running slowly, so he decides to install more RAM. Explain how this will affect the usage of virtual memory and the consequent performance of his computer. 2 marks
  3. Explain the use of cache memory and the role it plays in improving processing speeds 3 marks

       


      EXT Task

      HOQs:

      • What is Flash Memory? Write this down in your books and give examples
      • What is the difference between SSD (Solid State Devices) and HDD (Hard Disk Devices)? Give advantages and disadvantages for both. Use the link HERE to help

      Mini-Plenary - 5 minutes

      Using a green pen, assess your work. You should include:
      • Comments on SPAG
      • Attitude Grade (E,C,I,P) for presentation and effort
      • 1 Target for each piece of work
