Top Trumps

To learn what a database is and why it is useful
To organise and use an existing dataset
To be able to work in a team

Starter - 10 minutes

Get yourselves into alphabetical order around the room in:

Alphabetical order by surname

... You are now a human database!
Databases - what are they made up of???

A database is made up of records
(each one of you is a record in the class database!)

record is made up of fields
(each one of you has a field e.g. hair colour!)

Main Task - 40 minutes

You are going to create a set of Top Trumps!

Each trump card is like a record in a database. The card below gives you data about Aquaman. The titles (Height, strength etc) are like fields in a database.

Create your superhero ‘Top Trump’ card using the templates
You must choose the points for each field below (with a maximum of 5000 points for each)

Example:
Power: 5000
Age: 2789
Height: 3299
Nerd Factor: 1234
Loveable: 500

Remember your cards are all be swapped at the end so these will not necessarily be your playing cards.

Use colour.

Extension: Create another card

Plenary - 10 minutes

Play the game once you’ve finished!

Game Rules
  • Take it in turns to choose a field
  • If anybody has less than your points in that field their card is yours.
  • The winner is the person with the most cards.
